Onion havesting begins

The onions have done OK. This 50 foot row yielded maybe 50 pounds.

Changing to 30″ row spacing.

They were planted in 4 rows. This made cultivation difficult. Next time I think two single rows of onions might yield  the same or better.

It was tough working between the four rows. Weeding was all by hand. Cultivating was near impossible without hitting onion when hoeing a weed or breaking up the soil. There were too many plants. Some of the harvest has cuts from cultivation.

If next time we plant a single row of plants, two well separated rows can be easily cultivated. Especially with the new rotor-tiller. I like this idea. We’ll use 30 inch spacing between rows for small veggies.

In fact we had planned to set this row fallow and cover it with red clover. But we can plant Okra in two rows and have plenty water and much more Okra in the fall. I have two new pack of seed. Will try the new approach starting now.
