May 2015
Lots has happened in the garden since I last updated this page. Busy at work and Adrian has been doing the garden work.
- Planting now
- Peppers from greenhouse
- Tomatoes
- Corn
- Plant in late May
- Cantaloupe and Watermelon
- Okra – saved seed of Alabama Red
- Planted early this year
- Fruit trees in small garden. Two cherry and two apricot. Will plant cantelope ‘under’ these small trees
- Mow fallow section and use clippings for mulch. We planted 1/4 of garden in clover and annual rye. The annual rye makes for good (weed seed free) mulch. Mow twice per week. We can mulch one row per cutting.
- Compost
- Buy truckload from nursery for mulch
- Turn current piles with chicken manure and use best to mulch Tomatoes and Peppers.
- Harvest
- Currently getting nice 1-2 pounds of asparagus very other day.
- Strawberries will begin next week or on May 6th or so
- Blackberries in late May into June
- Shallot and Garlic will be ready in Late May early June. I hope to not let the Garlic get too ripe (cloves begin splitting).
January 2015
Not much work needed in January.
- Compost – turn piles and add shredded okra stalks.
- Mow fallow section and use grass clippings to mulch garlic and shallot.
