While we have laid Elm Tree Garden fallow this year I have had time to go see other gardens. A friend of ours who lives just Southeast of Cashion has built a lovely outdoor cannabis garden. His garden is licensed by the state and it is his first go at growing a commercial crop. JR tells us that growing cannabis is like growing cut flowers.
He let us take a few photos of his operation. But he also has a blog where he shows the steps of outdoor cannabis trellising. Some of you may have seen flowers grown in a greenhouse for cut flower arrangements. They will have a series of horizontal trellis lattices that train the stems to be long and straight and for flowers to be spread well so they grow uniformly is size.
Here you can see JR has done a similar trellising act with cannabis.
The plant is enclosed inside the tee posts and by two nearly hidden horizontal trellises which keep the top flowers long, straight and well separated. JR says that these will be the most massive and valuable flowers.
Here is another shot showing nice straight marijuana colas (flower stems).
Growing Cannabis is a lot of work, similar to tomato cultivation. A tomato is pruned to become a long single vine to promote maximum fruit development.
Marijuana is pruned for the same reason, but to have many branches and to avoid a one stem plant (which is their natural growth pattern).
A look under the plants shows how they have pruned the plant to produce many stems.
Pruning and trellising is used to promote yield for tomatoes and cannabis.
Thanks to JR’s Cannabis for our visit and sharing their approach to trellising.

People are hungry in Edmond, Oklahoma. There were times as a child that I was hungry. People don't get enough fresh vegetables. It is my hope to provide a source of nutritious fresh food to my community of local food banks, kitchens, friends and family.
The garden sits in the bottom land of Chisholm Creek and has great top soil and a nice flat 1/2 acre for cultivation. We have added a water well, irrigation and electricity.
The setting is my favorite reason to garden here. The old elm tree shades a nice sitting area from which to view the garden and the rich nature that comes and goes in the bottom.

Even in prosperous Edmond, food banks do a steady business serving the poor. Most efforts are operated by volunteers. They almost always need help. Please give cash or volunteer.
